Why Federal
Non-Profit Status
Federal non-profit status provides an important framework for accountability, transparency, and responsible financial management. As a federally incorporated organization, a non-profit operates within an established legal structure that requires appropriate record-keeping, governance, and financial oversight. This helps ensure that funds contributed by individuals, businesses, and other organizations are received and managed through a legitimate entity with clear responsibilities to its members and governing body.
Federal incorporation also creates a level of structure that goes beyond simply collecting funds for a cause. Decisions, financial records, and organizational activities are subject to formal governance requirements, helping create a credible and responsible space for public and private contributions. For donors and supporters, this provides greater confidence that an organization has established systems, accountability, and a clear purpose behind the work it is undertaking.
Why We Offer
Optional Memberships
Optional memberships are a common practice among non-profit organizations. They provide individuals who support an organization's mission with an opportunity to contribute financially and become more formally involved, while allowing the organization's services and resources to remain accessible to the wider public.
Little Town Big Data provides its services, resources, and information free of charge. We believe that access to information and community resources should not depend on someone's ability to pay.
Our optional annual membership, available for $10, provides a simple and affordable pathway for individuals who believe in our mission and want to contribute to the work we do. Membership allows supporters to become part of our broader member base and demonstrate their commitment to the long-term growth and sustainability of the organization.
Membership is not intended to put our services behind a paywall or create barriers to participation. Instead, it is a voluntary way for those who are interested and able to contribute directly to the mission while becoming more formally connected to the organization.
We welcome participation at every level—whether someone chooses to become a member, volunteer their time, share our resources, or simply engage with the work we do. Every form of support helps strengthen our mission and our ability to serve the community.
Why has Little Town Big Data incorporated?
As of August 2026, LTBD has officially incorporated at a federal level.
We made this decision based on a few reasons.
Legitimizing The Mission:
As this journey continues to unfold, our team has been invited into discussions and support spaces that we did not foresee! In order to best legitimize our activities (and ensure our volunteers and team members are looked after), we decided that federally incorporating was the wisest path forward for LTBD.
Opening Up Possibilities:
The goal has always been to produce a documentary about the Olds Synapse Project. It's important to our team that this story is told and learned from rather than brushed underneath the rug and forgotten. By incorporating, the possibility of artistic grants to help further our mission of education about data centre infrastructure and the changing landscape of industry.
Answering a Need:
To be totally honest, this is not where we initially imagined LTBD arriving! But as the Synapse project in Olds unfolded, our team continued to grow and we continued to encounter neighbouring communities and change-makers who were optimistic that an organization might evolve from this experience to offer educational resources and supports to those navigating industrial project proposals in their hometown.
MISSION:
We offer foundational educational support to any community that face significant industry coming to their doorstep. We stand as advocates for public education, safety, health and basic respect of Canadian communities and citizens with regards to the development of major industry within Canada.
